Ask tradespeople and the answer is consistent, and it costs nothing:

- A referral to a neighbour. Word of mouth is how most of these businesses actually grow.
- Clear access and a prepared space. Move what's under the sink, contain the dog, clear a parking spot. This saves real time.
- Paying promptly. Small businesses run on cash flow.
- Somewhere to wash up, and a drink. Small courtesy, disproportionately appreciated on a long job.
That's unusual and worth noting. Ask for an itemised invoice, and be wary if pricing seems to shift after work has started. A legitimate operation quotes a price and charges it.
What about the emergency premium?
