What you do in the first few minutes often matters more than how fast anyone can get to you. Three things, in order:
- Shut off the water. Main shutoff for a burst pipe or unknown leak; the small valve behind the fixture for a single toilet or sink. If you don't know where your main is, here's how to find it.
- Kill power to affected areas. If water is anywhere near outlets, panels, or a furnace, switch those circuits off at the breaker — but only if you can reach the panel without standing in water.
- Photograph everything. Before you mop up. Insurance adjusters want to see the damage at its worst, and you will not get a second chance at that.
